Why is the volume trace grey and green?

Volume is a measure of sound pressure so there will always be a volume reading in dB, even in a very quiet room. Background volume readings are drawn in grey and volume readings of your voice are drawn in green.

In this way the volume statistics only apply to your voice and not the ambient volume in your environment.
